In an abandoned house on the outskirts of Talagante (A town famous in Chile for its beliefs in witches and apparitions) there are five sisters who are being ``held back'' on earth by the strength of an unknown desire which prevents them from achieving their ``final rest.'' Since they died as old maids, everyone supposes that the desires have to do with sexual frustration. One day a young man shows up to buy their house. They receive him appearing (and acting) as old ladies, except for Bertina who makes herself appear as if she were twenty years old. One after the other, the sisters discover what their desires were (to drink moonshine, recover a hand-made clay figurine, accompany a sister, and to punish a hated person) and as they fulfill the wishes they are able to go to Heaven. However, Bertina falls in love with the young visitor and discovers that her wish was to get married and have children, which she can't fulfill since she is not corporeal. Therefore she must wait until the one she loves dies in order to join him. The play ends with the possibility of a miracle: just as the barren trees of the garden have suddenly flowered, Bertina may also regain her physical human form and fulfill her life-long dream of love.
