The Vieques Women (Las Viequenses)
Country :Puerto Rico
translated by Prof. Charles Philip Thomas
Las Viequenses (The Vieques Women) premiered in April of 2000 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In the work the author presents a retelling of the history of the Vieques islands; from the expropriation of land by the United States armed forces up to incidents in the year 2000 which were sparked by the death of the Vieques guard, David Sanes Rodríguez, who was killed when a bomb missed its target during some military exercises. Sandra Villerael of the Associated Press reported that ``Caricatures of political figures running for Governor of Puerto Rico provide comic relief in the intense drama which lasts for almost two hours.'' When questioned about the relationship between art and politics, Ramos-Perea asserted that ``Politics are part of my daily life, we writers are political beings. If we flee from politics we do not fulfill our duty as intellectuals in a colony.''
